Updates to Minnesota's Medicine Medical Cannabis Program 2023

A new law in Minnesota allows adults who are 21 years old or older to use a medical cannabis. This law also made some changes to the Medical Program marijuana program that helps people who need this medicine.

Here are some of the changes:

  1. People in the Medical Cannabis Program can now buy their medicine from special stores run by Native American tribes in Minnesota.

  2. Starting from July 1, 2023, people in the program will no longer pay the annual registration. But if you already paid the fee before that date, you won't get their money back.

  3. Starting from August 1, 2023, people can have their first visit with a doctor through a video call on the computer or phone.

  4. Starting from March 1, 2025, people will only have to see the doctor every three years to make sure they still need the medicine, instead of every year.

  5. Starting from March 1, 2025, people who help take care of others can buy medical cannabis when they are 18 years old instead of waiting until they are 21.

The Minnesota MMJ Card Program will move to a new office called the Office of Cannabis Management on March 1, 2025.

  • Item description
  • As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, it was the prevailing practice that insurance coverage for medical cannabis evaluations and associated services was not common in Minnesota. This was primarily due to the federal classification of cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States, which posed challenges for insurance companies concerning coverage.

It's essential to note that certain individuals might have the option to utilize their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to cover expenses related to this type of medical professional visit. The eligibility for such coverage may differ depending on the specific insurance plan and individual circumstances. Therefore, it is strongly advisable to consult with your insurance provider and carefully review your plan's terms and conditions.

It is important to recognize that insurance policies and regulations can evolve over time. To ensure the most accurate and current information regarding insurance coverage for medical cannabis evaluations and related services in Minnesota, it is recommended to reach out to your insurance provider or contact the state's medical cannabis program for any potential changes in policies
